Most of us already have the mindset to prepare our families during natural disasters. When we hear of an approaching storm, many of us rush to the supermarket to buy water, bread, etc. While this is an important step, it is not the only thing that should be done to ensure the safety of our loved ones. As much as we all wish that we would never experience a prolonged catastrophic event, it is essential that we prepare our family for long-term survival, for the weeks and perhaps months that follow. We would like to believe that life returns to normal quickly, but as we saw in the Gulf, Americans lived in sub-standard conditions for weeks, months and even years after the devastation.
